Some Early Records The
original school schoolhouse for School Section No. 6 was built on Lot 21 C2. This
building was later added to the house on the property. The
‘new’ Hamburg school was built in 1862. The old South Fredericksburgh Township
Records give the following accounts: Jan 24 1859 - Paid Ira Ham the
sum of $74 the balance of tax levied on school section No. 6 for school
purposes. Nov
29 1859 - Paid to the Trustees of school section No six one
hundred eighty dollars. Dec
22 1860 - Paid to the Trustees of school section No 6 one
hundred and forty dollars Especial tax.
1860 Wallings map showing
the location of the original schoolhouse on Lot 21, Concession 2. From
the February 1964 issue of the Christian Neighbourhood: “Just a note of interest regarding the
former Hawley School: Last summer when
repairs were being made to the sills it was discovered that there were as
many as six floors in the building, each worn out by the small feet of four
or five generations. The school had
been kept in good repair.” The Deed for the “new” school site
dated February 19, 1862 Between
John S. Bell and [his wife] Eliza Bell
- and - The Board of
Common School Trustees of School Section number Six in the Township of South
Fredericksburgh For the sum of
forty dollars, half an acre on the South half of Lot number nineteen in the
Third Concession of Fredericksburgh. The said [Trustees] will at all times
hereafter keep the said piece of land well fenced on the northerly and
westerly sides thereof.
1878 Meacham’s Atlas showing the location of the
schoolhouse from 1862 to 1964, [Today] the lot on the west side of County Road 8 directly
across from Huyck Street. Bruce Cuthill Memories of Hamburg
School “The
school had a belfry with a large bell, and inside the school a long bell
rope, which led down through the attic, was pulled to make the bell ring. It
was rung at 9:00 and at recess and noon hour. The
attic only went across the back of the school and there was a cathedral
ceiling over the desk area and the raised platform at the front of the room.
[A large pot-bellied stove] was kept burning low during the night in cold
weather, and Mr. Hilditch would be there to stoke it up early in the
mornings. On really cold days he would stay until nearly 9 o’clock, or at
least until the teacher arrived. Even with the fire going, the ink sometimes
froze in the bottles. Some
of the pupils had to come nearly two miles in the frigid weather. They
usually walked, or the more fortunate ones were brought by horse and cutter. We
usually had a Christmas concert on the evening just before Christmas
holidays. There was a Christmas tree and an exchange of gifts. The school was
lit for the evening with coal-oil or gas lamps or lanterns and was well
attended by the parents and other people of the community. There was a small
admission and the money was used to purchase items needed for the school,
such as books for the library. I remember one year we even got a new globe
with each continent and country marked in different colours. Every
spring on the first Friday in May we had Arbour Day. The children brought
garden rakes from home and the boys raked the school yard, cleaned up outside
and the girls would do some extra cleaning inside the school. At noon we took
our lunches to Hawley’s woods for a picnic, played games and picked
wildflowers. I remember once going to Sharp’s hard maple bush at Benn’s
Point.” |

FIRE DESTROYS RURAL SCHOOL Fire destroyed a one-room frame public
school eight miles south of Napanee on the Hamburg Road last Wednesday
morning. Bath Fire Department were called shortly before eight o’clock by the
teacher, William Pearson. The school has 35 pupils in grades one to eight.
Temporary accommodation for the pupils has been arranged at a school in
Adolphustown Township no longer in use. The Hamburg Road school will not be
re-built. The South Fredericksburgh Township School Board had already plans
underway for a new school which would replace it. February
