Early Records

It has not been confirmed when the school in Conway first opened. From records that do exist, we would assume that the school had always been located on Concession 1 Additional, Lot 1.

In 1817, two notices from the Kingston Gazette suggest the existence of a school in the Conway area. The first, from June 14 is signed George Sills, and warns the public about a teacher by the name of Cyrus Cory who apparently beat Sills’ six-year-old daughter. The second notice from October 20th, announces that a school on concession one, Fredericksburgh, “near John Camp’s,” had been opened with a Mr. Burns as teacher.

It may be assumed that the second notice referred to ‘John Kemp’, who lived on Lot 7 additional, the lot to the west of the schoolhouse. George Sills lived on Lot 1 additional, and would have had children attending the school. The six-year-old mentioned was probably his daughter, Flora Helen, born September 2, 1810. Flora eventually married Joseph Johnson and died in Prince Edward County on July 17, 1832 at the age of 21.

The Trustees of the School in the front Concession of Fredericksburgh, give public notice, that the said School is opened, in the school House near John Camp’s, under the instruction of Mr. Burns, who teaches Reading, Writing, English Grammar, Arithmetic, Geography, the Latin and Greek Languages, &c.

Further Information:

From the Kingston Herald, November 17 1846, a notice appeared for a temperance meeting to be held at “Isaac Ingersoll’s Esq., School House” in Fredericksburgh.

As seen by Wallings’ 1860 map, the Ingersoll family lived on the lot to the east of the school house.

The South Fred Account book shows  a payment to the Trustees of SS #1 in December of 1859.

The school appears on both Walling’s 1860 map and Meacham’s 1878 Atlas.

The first deed to the land for a school site at Lot 6, Concession 1 Additional doesn’t appear until 1875. The land was sold by Canniff Haight and [his wife] Jane Casey Haight to the Public School Trustees of Section No. One in the Township of South Fredericksburgh.

The “New” School House

In 1909, a new building was erected.

From the May 27th , 1909 edition of the Weekly British Whig;

“Great excitement has been created over the erection of a new cement block school house; finally a settlement has been reached and Mr. Harvey, Deseronto, has been given the contract for building.”

And from the June 10th 1909 edition:

“The schooner is at the wharf loaded with sand to be used in the erection of the new school house.”

Report On Conway School

The Christian Neighbourhood, October 1955

“Conway School, with 44 pupils and 1 teacher, is seriously overcrowded. Grades 2 and 5 each have 11 pupils, with 3 classes in Grade 2. The learning environment is definitely not conducive to good mental health on the part of the pupils and the teacher. While outdoor play space is adequate, the play equipment is nil, except for two balls. As for indoor play area in bad weather, there is none, nor any equipment for such. It is felt that the Flag should be an essential part of school equipment and flown according to regulations.  There is no flag at Conway School. The vestries are lacking in sufficient coat hooks and it must be bedlam at noon hour when 30 boys congregate in the boy's vestry for lunch boxes.

The heating system is apparently adequate but there is need for moisture. No one present knew if the heating plant conforms with existing fire regulations. There is one fire extinguisher at the classroom door, and which the teacher only knows how to use. There are no fire drills. The first aid kit in the teacher's vestry is in good condition. Ventilation is fair, also the lighting system. It is sometimes difficult to eliminate glare.

Caretaking is a major problem in rural schools, and leaves much to be desired. Caretakers are hard to get and the salary is low. General cleanliness is not maintained.

Health is included in the course of study - a fundamental health rule is that hands should be washed before meals and after going to toilet. Hand washing facilities in the school are entirely inadequate. Why teach what cannot be put into practice?

Drinking water from the well on school property is tested annually by the Sanitary InspectorThe children are complaining of the queer taste and it is not known if any sample has been taken as yet this year.  Disposable paper drinking cups would be a tremendous improvement over the present system.

There are no bulletin boards and insufficient shelving but there is a great deal of waste space which could be utilized for these. $10.00 per year is allocated by the School Board to arts and crafts materials.  Three years ago it was $15.00 with smaller pupil enrolment. Books are expensive but they are a 'must'.  $36.00 was allocated for library books this year.”
