The School Buildings [including
additional information from Hay Bay Women’s Institute Tweedsmuir Book] The First School
Building The first school may have been built in
1831, shortly after the land was deeded by Abraham Bogart. It was located on the south side of the
present road (County Road 9), made of logs and later covered with clapboard.
The interior walls were plastered. There were large wooden desks. The building was torn down in 1868 and
some of the material used to build the new school. Most of the original grounds have since
washed into Hay Bay. The
Second School Building The second building was erected in 1868
and located across the road from the first school at the edge of the bay on
the Southeast corner of the G.M. German farm. It was a frame structure with
plastered walls, and again, wooden desks. In 1906 the building was sold to Oscar
Williams for $17.00. The
Last School Building Built in 1907, this was located farther
from the Bay on the site of the old Gosport Methodist Church. The land had
been purchased and exchanged with neighbours to increase the lot size of the
school grounds, and so that the building could be erected a safe distance
from the Bay. The wood shed was added in 1919. New seats replaced the older
ones in 1927. In 1935, a new steel roof was added. The school was taken over by the North
Fredericksburgh School Board in 1952. It closed in 1954 and the students were
bused to S.S. #10 North Fred. The building sat vacant for about twenty
years and was finally purchased and repurposed as a residence.
