The Schoolhouse [photo 2013]

Building erected 1898 after a fire on a previous building,

195 3rd Concession Road

Some Early Records

By 1825, there were four schools in Adolphustown Township,

School Sections numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Two were established before 1816, another in 1819, and the fourth in 1821.

The specific year that S.S. #3 was opened and its exact location have not been confirmed.

First Recorded Land Deed for S.S. #3

[January 16th 1875]

Between Paul Trumpour of Adolphustown

-and- the Public School Trustees of School Section No. Three in the Township of Adolphustown.

In consideration of fifty dollars, Parcel of land on the North side of the public road running through the third concession of Adolphustown, commencing in the centre of Lot No. twenty-three on the north side of the road; [containing] one-half acre of land, to have and to hold the same in trust to and for the use of a Public School in and for School section No. 3 in the Township of Adolphustown, for the education of the resident youth of said school section.

[Signed by] Trustees: Paul Trumpour, John H. Roblin, L.M. Outwater, Elisha Ruttan.

SS3 Adol map

The School House shown in the 1878 Atlas on Lot 23 Concession 3 Adolphustown

on the north side of what is now known as the 3rd Concession Road.

A school is shown on the 1860 Wallings Map on the north end of Lot 25 Concession 3.

However, no school is shown on Lot 23 at that time.

On January 27th, 1872, a bylaw was passed by the council of Adolphustown, uniting school sections

three and five into one section to be known as School Section Number Three.

The school marked on the 1860 map, is most likely one of these two original sections.

The School on Lot 23, Concession 3, burned in December of 1897.

An article in the May 13th, 1898 issue of the Napanee Beaver states that:

“the 3rd concession school house is being rapidly built to replace the one burned last December.”

No other accounts of the burning of this building have been discovered.
