The Schoolhouse [photo 1950s] 10346 Hwy 33 |
|
The School House shown on the 1860 Wallings Map on Lot 22 Concession 1 Adolphustown on the north side of what is now Highway 33 (Loyalist
Parkway), where it intersects with County Road 8, just east of the village |
|
Some Early Records By 1825, there were four schools
in Adolphustown Township, School Sections numbered 1, 2, 3
and 4. Two were established before 1816,
another in 1819, and the fourth in 1821. We have not been
able to find any early deeds for the S.S. 1 School site.
Kingston Chronicle & Gazette, June 21, 1843 The notice above
would refer to the first building on the site at the top of the hill, just
east of the village. Jack Duffett said
that his mother, Mary Adelaide Watson-Duffett (born 1848) started to school
in a building at this site. The first class
photo shown below, from c1899 was most likely taken
in this old building.
