The Union Church

 

The church was located on the South Shore of Hay Bay, just east of the Gore Road (County Road 25), an area known as “The Pines.”

The property had previously been used as the “Union School House” and in 1885 was donated by the owner, Robert Magee, for use as church open to everyone; Methodists, Anglicans, Presbyterians, Baptists and Quakers.

The said parties of the second part do hereby covenant with the said parties of the first part and with all concerned to

 hold the said property in trust for Church purposes and out of love for the cause of God do or cause to be improved

the building standing on said Lot and known as the Union School House

and to prepare it as a place for the worship of the Almighty God

and to be known hereafter as the Union Church,

said building to be improved according to the present contract

and afterward to be kept in repair as the judgment of the said parties may direct.

The said parties further agree to hold the said building as a place of worship

to be used by the various Evangelical Denomination of the neighbourhood as follows:

Methodist, Anglican, Presbyterian, Baptist and Quaker

and all management and control of said building to be vested in the said parties of the second part.

Notes from “The Pines” in the Napanee Beaver

 

 

Feb 25 1898

A teameeting will be held in the Union church here on Friday, 4th March. All are cordially invited. Mr. G.F. Ruttan, Napanee, will act as chairman. Admission 25c.

 

Aug 18 1905

Our popular pastor, Mr. Boyce, is giving a weekly service here which is well attended.

 

Nov 9 1906

The Sunday School at The Pines will give an entertainment in the Union church, on Friday, Nov. 23d. A good programme is in preparation by the Sunday School. Refreshments will be served from 6 to 8  o’clock.

Admission 20 cents.

 

Oct 18 1907

Our former esteemed school teacher, Miss McCaugherty, is frequently in our neighbourhood, assisting in the preparations for a Sunday School concert and chicken pie social to be held in the Union Church, Oct. 25th. A cordial invitation is extended to all. An excellent programme, consisting of songs, drills, dialogues, etc., is being prepared. One of the chief attractions will be a King from the Old Country.

 

Sept 11 1908

Rev. Mr. Roberts has resumed his services at the Union church and was welcomed by a large congregation on Sunday evening. Come again, all are welcome.
