The
foundation of the red brick church was of stone brought by horse-drawn
vehicles from Cataraqui and the full sized basement contained a wood furnace.
A steeple rose high over the vestibule and supported a heavy weathervane. It
was the rod support that attracted lightening and after two strikes the
steeple was removed in 1957. Sheds
for the horse barns were located immediately to the north of the church. In
time the sheds were removed and in the 1930s
hydro was installed in the building. Apart from decorating and a sort of
kitchen added to the basement there were no changes for over 100 years to the
edifice. There was never running water and a chemical toilet eventually
serviced the Sunday School. By the 1950s
an oil furnace replaced the wood furnaces that had served for many years. On June 24, 1989, a tornado hit the
church, removing the north section of the roof and damaging the interior.
Repairs were made; wainscoting and original furnishings were sanded and
redone. New wiring and heating systems were installed and an addition framed
in on the back of the church. The addition contained an entrance, meeting
room, two bathrooms, and wheel chair access to the basement. A good water
supply was found on the property and piped into the church, and a kitchen
included in the basement. |
